Have you started playing some game because the character or trophy attracted you in the Smash series?
Well, by the time I bought Melee, I only the Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon franchises if I remember correctly. Then I started playing Metroid, Fire Emblem, (even Ice climbers if you count some minutes through emulator), so I would like to ask you if Smash has somehow influenced in the games you play?
It was certainly a good Nintendo culture lesson for me. I'm even playing Earthbound now, and it's a great game. But I would have never noticed it without Smash Bros.
It's true that there are games I would never of heard of (of lent an ear) if it weren't for smash brothers. But it hasn't gotten me playing games because of it. I've tried Fire Emblem and that's about it.
I bought Fire Emblem because I knew about Marth and Roy from Melee and wanted to check it out. I also picked up Kirby 64 because of SSB. But aside from that, I guess I technically know of some franchises because of SSB but I haven't really picked them up yet. And the ones I did learn about from SSB aren't ones that I've really stuck with. XD But I am glad that different characters are in SSB because it does give me a better glimpse at Nintendo's franchises, so even if I don't play the games they're from, I still feel a little more knowledgeable about Nintendo.
Well, yeah, it serves as a great encyclopedia of Nintendo's history. But, hey, for some reason, don't you feel like trying Mach Rider at least for a minute if you could? Maybe Mother 3? Or maybe I just get too excited for every tiny thing like that. xD!
I actually finished Super Metroid because of SSB. It also got me to try out Zelda, Star Fox, Fire Emblem and F-Zero as well.
Never bothered with Earthbound, though. Tried both Kid Icarus and Ice Climbers, it didn't impress me much.

The Smash games have hardly influenced the games I play. I started to play Metroid Prime Hunters on DS partially because of Samus in Melee but mainly because I wanted to actually put some use into the thumbstrap. I think I'll play a Fire Emblem game once one comes out on DS.
Actually, I think I bought Dr.Mario and Ice Climber for the GBA because of SSBM. I now see that wasn't a very wise decision.
When I bought Melee, I became interested in many new things, like Fire Emblem, Metroid, Custom Robo, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, and Pikmin (Although to a small degree, I don't like it that much).
I can't say that SSB has ever made me try out a game...most of the new games that I try are because either they look interesting to me from gameplay vids and stuff, they get a lot of critical praise and I find a good deal on them, or people recommend them to me. The reason I got into Fire Emblem was because a lot of friends online played it and I checked into it and tried out one of the games.
I picked up the Ice Climber port on the GBA because of Melee. I never heard of them before that. But I thought, they were in Smash so it must've been a good game. Then I played it and WTF?
